Matthew Schaefer's Calder Season Is Even More Unprecedented Than You Think

Matthew Schaefer won the Calder with 59 points, and every one of them came while the game was still in doubt. No Calder winner has done that, and almost no rookie of any kind.

Matthew Schaefer hero

Matthew Schaefer won the 2025-26 Calder Trophy with 59 points: 23 goals and 36 assists. Run the What If rule over every one of those points and the total doesn't move. Not one of the 59 came on a goal scored after the game was already decided.

So we asked whether that's actually rare. Compare it with every Calder winner before him, and with every other rookie since the award began in 1932-33.

Against the other Calder winners

The league as a whole scores about a fifth of its goals after the game is decided, so a typical player loses some points. Among the 77 skaters who have won the Calder (goalies excluded), the median winner kept 79.4% of his points. Among the 15 defensemen it was 85.2%.

Schaefer is the only one of the 77 to keep all of them. The closest were Mario Lemieux in 1984-85, who kept 97.0% of his 100 points, and Moritz Seider in 2021-22, who kept 96.0% of his 50.

Against every rookie

Keeping every point is easy if you only have a few. A player with 10 points and none padded isn't telling us much. So the fair comparison is rookies with a real workload. Counting each player's first NHL season with at least 25 games, here is how many rookie seasons there have been since 1932-33, and how many of them had no padded points:

Rookies with at leastRookie seasonsWith no padded points
40 points5664
50 points2862
59 points1671
40 points, defensemen only701

At 59 points or more, Schaefer is the only one. Among rookie defensemen with 40 or more points, he's the only one who never had a point erased.

The rookies who came close

Only three other rookies with 40 or more points never had a point erased:

1989-90Igor Larionov444.41.0%
1987-88Pierre Turgeon428.00.014%

"Padded points expected" is how many a player would have been likely to collect given how much his own team padded: the share of his teammates' goals that were scored after the game was decided, applied to the goals he took part in. The last column is the chance of ending up with none at that rate.

That is where Schaefer differs. Daigle's Ottawa team padded only 4.5% of its goals, so he was expected to have about three padded points. The New York Islanders padded 16.6% of their goals in 2025-26, so a player involved in 59 of them should have ended up with about 13. Having none is a very different thing from having none because your team never blew anyone out.

The most under-padded rookie season on record

Measured against each player's own teammates, Schaefer's season is the most extreme of the 566 rookie seasons with 40 or more points. He sits 4.1 standard deviations below what the Islanders' goals would predict. The next two are Pelle Eklund (1985-86, 66 points, 6 padded where about 20 were expected) and Auston Matthews (2016-17, 69 points, 6 padded where about 18 were expected).

4.1standard deviations fewer padded points than his teammates' goals predicted: the most of any rookie with 40 or more points

What this does and doesn't say

It isn't a record for all players. Rick Kehoe had 65 points and none padded for Pittsburgh in 1982-83, but his team padded only 4.7% of its goals that season, so that outcome was far less surprising. Only two player-seasons in NHL history, Kehoe's and Schaefer's, reach 59 points with none padded, and nobody has reached 70.

It also doesn't say why. The data records what happened, not what a coach intended, and it can't separate how Schaefer was used from how the Islanders played around him. He averaged over 24 minutes a night over 82 games, so this was a heavy workload, not a small sample. Whatever the reason, this was a rookie season in which he never collected a point on a game that was already over.

One season is also a single snapshot. In our earlier work, how much a player pads has been mostly a reflection of his team, and not a trait that carries from year to year. This year's Islanders will help show whether his number was a one-year result or something that stays with him.
